Mission

Our Mission
The mission of the American Cancer Society is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support—ensuring everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

About the American Cancer Society
As the leading cancer-fighting organization, the American Cancer Society is committed to ending cancer as we know it, for everyone. We work across all communities to ensure that every individual affected by cancer receives the care, support, and resources they need.

Through our work in research, advocacy, and direct patient support, we are the only organization dedicated to improving lives at every stage of the cancer journey. Whether it’s funding groundbreaking research, providing free 24/7 guidance through our helpline, or offering rides and lodging during treatment, we’re here to help.

What We Do

Patient Support
We invested $354 million in 2022 alone to ensure patients and caregivers have access to trusted information, emotional support, and essential services. From our 24/7 helpline to free transportation and lodging, we’re here every step of the way.

Research and Discovery
With over $5 billion invested in cancer research over the past 75 years, we continue to lead efforts to uncover causes, improve treatments, and enhance quality of life. In 2022, we invested $166 million to advance this critical work.

Advocacy
Through our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, ACS CAN, we champion policy changes to improve access to care, reduce disparities, and ensure equitable treatment for all. In 2022, we dedicated $46 million to these efforts.

Volunteers Drive Our Mission
Our work is powered by a global grassroots force of volunteers. From event leaders to peer supporters, volunteers bring our mission to life in more than 21,000 communities across the nation.
